Description
A few summers ago, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to visit somewhere I have always longed to see and doing something I have always wanted to do - painting the countryside in the south of France. I couldn’t help but imagine fields of red and orange poppies stretching out as far as the eye could see. For years imagine painting these during my time, “dans la sud” (in the south).
Soon after my arrival in Provence, I discovered there were no poppies in sight! While everything was gorgeous (such as the lush fields of lavender), the locals told me, the poppy season had passed. They apparently only appear in the countryside during the very limited time frame of late spring to early summer.
This painting is a watercolor gouache painting that I created in my studio. I used a combination of reference pictures for inspiration. I hope to one day return to the south of France during poppy season, and to see and paint those wild blooming fields.

I was thinking of trying watercolor gouache but didn't like how it was handled by many artists. This is so beautiful and handled so well I am excited to try the medium. Thanks for showing this beautiful work!!
