It is impossible not to fall in love with the luscious peony. The sweet blooms of spectacular pinks, deep reds, sunlight yellows, and delicate whites bring joy to any garden. The layers of voluptuous, translucent petals remind me of the folds of a wedding dress. The arrival of their intoxicating fragrance marks the beginning of spring and early summer. It is no wonder why the peony has a timeless place in literature and poetry.
I tried to capture the gorgeous colors and delicate qualities of a peony in this translucent watercolor painting. I purchased some from my local farmer’s market to use as reference, and my goal was to create a stylized peony and paint the essence of the flower. I used a mix of vibrant pinks, reds, and orange for the petals and a combination of brilliant chartreuse and olive for the leaves.
